چکیده

PFLOTRAN a massively parallel computer code for modeling coupled hydro-thermalchemical processes in variably saturated, non-isothermal porous media is applied to sequestration of supercritical CO2 in deep geologic formations. Two different methods of solution to the governing partial differential equations are implemented referred to as variable switching and the flash approach. Variable switching entails choosing the independent variables according to the set of phases present in a control volume, whereas in the flash approach a persistent set of variables are used through the calculation. The features and performance of the two approaches are described and contrasted in regard to stability and convergence, flexibility of choice of solver, and scaling behavior.

PFLOTRAN: Massively Parallel 3D Simulator for CO2 Sequestration in Geologic Media

Geologic sequestration in depleted oil reservoirs, saline aquifers, etc. has been proposed as an effective way to stabilize the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere and thus mitigate its effect on global climate change. We have developed a massively parallel 3-D reservoir simulator PFLOTRAN for modeling supercritical CO2 sequestration in geologic formations based on continuum scale mass and e...

Predicting and evaluating the effectiveness ofocean carbon sequestration by direct injection

Direct injection of CO2 into the ocean is a potentially effective carbon sequestration strategy. Therefore, we want to understand the effectiveness of oceanic injection and develop the appropriate analytic framework to allow us to compare the effectiveness of this strategy with other carbon management options. Here, after a brief review of direct oceanic injection, we estimate the effectiveness...

A Multi-Pollutant Framework for Evaluating CO2 Control Options for Fossil Fuel Power Plants

As part of DOE/NETL’s Carbon Sequestration Program, we are developing an integrated, multi-pollutant modeling framework to evaluate the costs and performance of alternative carbon capture and sequestration technologies for fossil-fueled power plants. The model calculates emissions, costs, and efficiency on a systematic basis at the level of an individual plant or facility. Both new and existing...
